Any ideas on this, haven't planted anything this year in pot.  Must be from last year, the rain washed all my codes of the pots.

Actually must have been having a senior moment, which is getting uncomfortably frequent since passing 50 in March, I did find that I had planted some dahlias, looking at some old labels I keep in a drawer either last summer or the summer before.

Gotta laugh haven't ya, no wonder shop assistants have suddenly stared calling me dear and offering to help me pack.

They aren't biannual are they - dahlia's.  Have a vague recollection now that I had planted too many in the pot as it was too much foilage and not enough flower.

Dahlias are a tuberous perennial.  They will flower first year so some treat them as annuals.  If you want to keep them overwinter you must protect the tubers against frost and waterlogged ground.  Usually this means lifting them & storing inside.

Don't know why but I have always kept dahlias longer if I have left them in the ground.  Any I have lifted and tried to store I have lost.

Interesting, I'll maybe try that in the hope that our winters are becoming milder.  Do you give protection against hard frosts?  We usually get -15degs C, coldest we've had in 21 years here was -24degs C.   This winter, coldest was -5degs C.

No protection against frosts  I just leave them to get on with it.

Years ago when we had our first house our next door neighbour used to spend hours in his garden digging weeding etc. I used to come home potter about a bit poke a bit of this and that in and leave it.  My efforts used to thrive and his were a bit hit an miss.  One day he decided that I must have green fingers! The difference was I was growing flowers and he was growing veg.  Now I have started growing veg I can appreciate how difficult it can be.
