I wanted to give my plot some structure this year so decided to create some proper paths. I was wondering how I could manage this in an unobtrusive way then had a eureka moment! :idea:

I "acquired"   some bread crates and have sunk these into the soil. While they might not be to everyone's taste I like their practicality and the fact they are non-permanent.

I thought I'd sprinkle some grass seed on top to see if I could get a grass path to grow up between the holes, the idea being that in a year or so I can lift the crates and have grass paths.

Pure genius or pure lunacy? I'd be interested in your thoughts.

go for it i ahd a job of laying slabs that ahd gaps in for just that the crates wil stop the barrows n boots from tromping ya gras .mow them and leave them in they aint going no place mate

What did gardeners do before plastic bread crates?   British Bakeries also dropped some off at my place and they get used for all sorts of jobs.

I reckon your grass seed idea will work pretty well MisterPlough.  Historic Scotland use rolls of plastic stuff designed for the purpose.  High traffic, grassed paths.  

You'll get some temporary damage when you lift them but the zig-zags will soon grow in if you rake over some sifted soil or sand.

i think its a great idear.
i "found" some milk crates that i have in my van with all my bottles of oil and sray cans of lubricants in. it stops them from rolling around.
