Interesting article I came across here - I'd been wondering myself.  I don't know how much land an acre is but I know it's A Lot More Than You Think.

Does this fit in with what people here have found?

The guy most likely not to live in the UK.

Here though it is almost certainly answered by for the majority of us as 'as much as you can afford', still be postage stamp sized.

An acre is about 4000 square metres.  I have about 400 sq m (2 plots) and find that plenty to be going on with and definitely aim to feed me and the OH from this (with plenty to spare)

That's an interesting article, but I daren't show it to Brian, who took me to look at a 24 acre holding last week, and at nearly 62 wants us to get a BIGGER mortgage to buy it so we can sell LOADS more Chickens!!!!!

And at nearly 58 all I want to do is retire early (come on lottery!!) and do a bit of travelling, visit my family, and all my lottie friends! and read and cross stitch and go on holiday.   oh so many things, rather than spend my slightly older years working on a chicken farm!!!!!!  but don't tell Brian!!!!

1 Acres is 4047 square metres
1 Pole = 5.5 yards, so one square pole is 30.25 sq yds,

My allotment is 525 square yards, or 460 square metres.

So its about 18 square poles. I think most allotments are about that size, because it is the amount of land deemed enough to keep a family of four in food.

Tolstoy reckoned that Pahom only needed a plot 6 foot long, and Ben Johnson managed with even less...

Errm 160 square rods/poles to the acre.

Can I point out that the rod/pole/perch measurement can be linear or square but is never referred to as a square measure. If you have a 10 pole plot it infers an area of 10 poles, but if your plot were 10 poles long it would infer a linear measure. Niether are declared as such.

Whilst I think you are, strictly speaking, correct, I have frequently seen it referred to as 'square' presumably to distinguish it just as I did. The site that I put the link to is unusual in that it mentions context as being the defining factor but then uses the term 'square' to distinguish as well. ;)

I saw an interesting book a few weeks ago, that had general plans for a one acre small holding and a five acre small holding and, much as the article says, the extra land was mainly used for feed for the horse that was needed to till the extra land :?

In answer to the original question of how much land is required I reckon about 50% more than you've got. The plot is never big enough.
