Mrs Growster went to school in Bury St Edmunds, and she often recalls the smell of the sugar beet lorries trundling around all day.

It then struck us that during the various wars when sugar was scarce, did people grow their own beet, and how would they have used it?

Was talking about sugar beet the other day , during after the war there was lots grown in Hampshire but today nowhere near as much !
I think most growing now takes place nearer the factories.
 Good sugar extraction was not very easy or a few spivs during the war would have had their own hookey black market sugar racket !
Should think it is good for  moonshine too !

Used to be a lot grown when I lived near Stamford - might there have been a factory somewhere around Peterborough.   Mrs Bouquet

It's being grown here North Norfolk.

Seem to remember someone in another country India/Africa/other was talking to Norfolk farmers for information on growing it in their country.

Sugar factory in Bardney which deals with sugar beet. Leaves are used for cattle fodder and used as beet pulp in dog food.
You can also make wine with it.
