Over winter Onions & Garlic
« on: June 24, 2018, 15:41 »
As relative "newbies" we grew Onions "Radar" and "Electric" over winter, as well as some garlic.  I have posted photos of the first onions lifted, plus our garlic.  The onions are up to 8cm diameter and about 7-8 ounces in weight.  Seems OK to us, but we have no previous to compare them with.  We also got 20 out of 24 garlic planted.  Enjoy the weather, comments always welcome!

The reason we chose onion "Radar" was according to reviews and sales pitch, they do store very well! However, we shall see. ???

A good haul there Freefolk. A lot of our onions bolted so won't keep, but as long as you dry them off well (without cooking them in this heat ) they will keep perfectly well for months, so no worries there.

The garlic of course keeps for a very long time! Are you going to keep some good fat ones to plant this Autumn?

Might give some garlic to our neighbours, not sure if se will grow again.  However might plant half a dozen cloves and see!

They look fine. As mentioned, far more over Winter onions bolt than their Summer relatives. About 30% of mine bolted, but they're fine to eat and the small inner core can be discarded if that's not your bag., A good size this year., but with the garlic being slightly smaller than normal.  If you buy 2 different over winter batches, you may well find more bolt from one batch than the other. The rest always last into the Autumn for me, Radar included, and of course by then the Summer ones will be pulled, dried and strung up.
