Spiky rhubarb sticks?
« on: June 21, 2018, 19:14 »
Now I think I know what you are going to say, but this is a mystery to me!  I have been growing rhubarb in the same patch for a few years, and every year I get a good crop of healthy sticks.  This year, in amongst the rhubarb, are a couple of "rogue" plants.  They have spiky stalks and leaves.  They look like, and probably are, Gunnera.  However, there is no Gunnera in the vicinity.  No Gunnera within several miles.  Is it possible for rhubarb to "revert" to a wild state?  If not, what has happened to my plants?  ???

Hi again - here are a couple of photos.  You can't see the "normal" rhubarb in these, but it is growing in the same patch.  By the way, although I am new today, I used to be a member of the forum but when I tried to log on, it seems my details had been lost, which is why I am a newbie again!  So, thanks for your welcome - it's good to be back!

It does look mighty suspicious, and although Gunnera's nickname is giant rhubarb, it isn't a close enough relation to be a reversion from your edible rhubarb. I'd just dig it all out - unless you fancy a giant taking over the bed
