What to plant in wildlife pond?
« on: October 09, 2017, 14:05 »
Hi what do I need to plant in my pond? It's preformed 2mx1m, will be for wildlife only, no fish.  Any hints/tips would be good as haven't done one before, (its also not in situ yet)

Many thanks 😊

Nothing too invasive but something native... brooklime is good, and don't forget to plant  marginas  and also oxygenators like water buttercup

Marsh Marigold and Water Forget-me-not would be nice as well, both can grow in shallow water at the edge of the pond.

I would avoid yellow flag iris, it bulks up and takes over the whole pond in no time.

Agree about the yellow flag iris - mine was planted as a marginal but obviously doesn't understand the meaning of the word (I have had to use a pruning saw to cut back the roots of mine as they creep stealthily across the water, which is both tricky and a bit bum-clenching in a PVC lined pond! )

A water lily can look very attractive, but make sure you choose one of an appropriate size for your pond's size and depth.

Of the submerged oxygenating plants I've found hornwort the most reliable, and of quite pleasing appearance too.
Sow your seeds, plant your plants. What's the difference? A couple of weeks or more when answering possible queries!
