Hellebore Problems
« on: March 12, 2013, 13:43 »

Hi guys,

I've just been down to my allotment for a little walk, and all my Hellebores have suddenly wilted and fallen over!

Its as if the stems have lost their strength to hold the flowers up.

We have just had a hard frost … but I thought Hellebores were fully hardy, even when in flower.

Could this be disease, pests or something … ? Has anyone experienced this before?

I've personally not had a problem with my hellebores, and my winters and early springs are very hard and cold compared to the UK.

Normally hellebores are rarely bothered by pests or diseases so it could just be frost, here's a listing of potential hellebore problems and you can decide if any fit your problem: LINK

Hi Trillium,

Thanks for the link, very good site =]

However, non seem to fit the bill … I was scared by the 'black death' virus, but the symptoms don't match.

I've been watching the Hellebores develop over the past few weeks and they were perfectly healthy until this morning … I really am baffled.

I will keep checking them and update with more information and pictures tomorrow.

If anyone else has any idea's please help!

Kind regards,

- Gary.

I wonder if some dog, fox or cat has urinated on them? That will set back any plant.

My hellebores all collapsed on Monday and Tuesday but are ok again now - think it was just the exceptionally cold weather.  Are yours ok now?

I agree with agatha, mine fall over after a hard frost and pick up again later in the day, also snowdrops do the same.
