Beginner again - patio tomatoes
« on: September 14, 2006, 13:08 »
Hello

I have another question regarding tomato plants.

My mum (in the UK) mentioned "tumbler" type tomato plants for patios. I have bought a couple of plants from the garden centre here in New Zealand - variety is "Patio Prize" (supposedly for pots and containers - they are a cherry tomato variety) - and I was wondering when I put them in a planter (approx 12" wide and 24" deep) how often I should feed them and with what?

I think I will have to water them very frequently as we have very strong sun here but I do know that when they are in containers - ( I have filled the container with potting mix) they need additional nutrition.

Many thanks again

Tomato feed
Every 2 weeks while it's growing and once a week when it's fruiting I think or just follow the directions on the bottle (which should be your guide, not what us lot say).
wistfully hoping to one day be mostly organic gardener in North London.

Inb containers you will need to water EVERY DAY, sometimes twice a day because they will dry out very quickly and if they dry out two things happen - they die, or they burst when you suddenly remember to water them again! So do as Heather ways about feeding, but keep up with the watering every day without fail. You should have lots of tomatoes (you could plant some in a sunny place and some in a place that gets shade in the afternoon. So, next year, you will know what is the best place!

Keep the plot cultivated, that's the best way to ensure its future.

Yes, I forgot to mention that. Even with swellgel crystals in my tomato pots, they were always bone-dry in the mornings and in the evenings. You need to keep up watering regularly because the dry-soak-dry-soak way will result in split tomatoes. Nothing wrong with split tomatoes but they're a bit squishy :)
