I put a whole chicken outside last night (5pm ISH) to start defrosting to use today, just been outside and seen it 😣 can't believe I forgot to bring it in. I've shoved it in the fridge but am I right in thinking is probably been out too long to risk using? (I have young children)

With young children I wouldn't risk it as a roast bird.
You could put the whole thing in a pan with veg and water and simmer it for stock and chicken meat for soup.

I would have put my hand on the chicken to see how cold it was and judge from that .
A large frozen bird can take a long time to get to a temperature where bacteria can thrive especially overnight with no heating on.
Many a time a frozen bird put into the fridge after a couple of hours on the worktop can still be icy on the inside the next day.
