Laying grass seeds for hens
« on: February 23, 2011, 17:02 »
Hi,

On my allotment I have sectioned a patch off from the hens so I can grow some grass.
I want to provide the hens with some grass and want to do it the cheapest way which is growing from seed.
I want some grass seeds that will grow good tough grass not a perfect lawn.
Does anyone have advice on the best seeds to buy for my needs ?

I will rotate the hens on it so it doesn't get destroyed by them as soon as it has grown a decent length.
The soil can get quite wet and boggy when we have alot of rain.

Thank you x

You are probably best off with a mix heavy on rye grass - usually sold as hardwearing lawn seed or similar.

I don't grow grass for my chickens, but if I have a spare patch I chuck some mixed poultry corn down and grow wheat grass for them, which they love  :)
