I asked the nice man at the Tip (oops recycling centre) to save me hessian backed carpet and the rain goes through that and it seems to kill most weeds. I covered most of my plot and then just uncovered what I could cope with each year, after 2years the ground was mostly clear and could just be dug, removing roots of what was left. This year I'm onto the last bit and it's so easy to clear in comparison with that first bit.
