Taking Lavender cuttings.
« on: July 17, 2018, 14:55 »
MODS - please move post if necessary.
What time of year is best for taking Lavender cuttings and how do you over-winter them so they can be planted out next year?
I work very hard so don't expect me to think as well.

I got 1 out of 3 hardwood lavender cuttings (Hidcote) to take last year, so this year I'm trying softwood cuttings, which some say root quicker and more reliably (not that anyone says they're difficult whichever method you use.)

Now is as good a time as any - main task is to find shoots without flower buds, cut about 4" off, remove lower leaves, pinch out growing point, stick in compost and keep moist. Only potted mine up 3 days ago so too early to say how well this method will work.
Once they're rooted I'll pot them on and keep them in the GH for planting out next year, although English
lavenders are pretty tough and would probably survive OK outdoors (French are less hardy, although better at football. ;))
Sow your seeds, plant your plants. What's the difference? A couple of weeks or more when answering possible queries!

Thanks. I was going to use softwood cuttings but didn't know whether to do a heel cutting or snip it off. I got my Hidcote in spring and it's been an absolute joy, so I'm going to try doing a hedge by the patio.

This is very timely here too, as we have long straggly lavender in the front garden and want to replace it with nice neat Hidcote, which we have as a little hedge on the plot.

I shall be snipping away any day now... thank you JayG :D

A timely reminder for me to take some too. I've got a few small lavender hedges around the plot and intend to put in a few more.

I am currently looking after my neighbours cat and they have a fabulous display of lavender so I think I may just have to  take my snips and a plastic bag and try some cuttings.
have tried many times before and have had no success.
