Title: Too early to plant out tomatoes???
Post by: Hampshire Hog on May 15, 2017, 09:44
Hi all I keep looking at my tomatoes in the plastic greenhouse and wondering when I can put them into their grow bags outside. Normal rule is when all risk of frost has passed but the weather men/women seems to be forecasting more cool conditions towards the end of the week. Has anyone put their tomatoes out yet???

Cheers HH

I got sick on mine hanging round the house, so I planted mine out at the weekend. They'll be in an unheated polytunnel but we're quite sheltered, night time temps are in the 10-11 degrees range so they should be ok. They're also in pots rather than planted into the ground, so I can 'rescue' them if needed.

Another person on our plots was also planting out his toms at the weekend.

I have planted the toms in the greenhouse border, but because I sow outside ones later, they can stay inside for another week or 10 days before they get planted outside.

I've planted some up in the greenhouse but none outside yet.

Also, Monty says it's too early to plant toms out and Monty MUST be obeyed!  ::) :D

I would not risk mine yet as there is still a chill in the wind up here in the sunny midlands.

Mine went out today.  No room left in greenhouse, and they would have needed potting on into huge pots in order to keep them going.  They were starting to look a bit hungry, despite having been fed, so I think they should do better outside where they can spread their roots.

Mine are going out next week before they burst their pots! If a cold night or two comes along, then I shall fleece them

Well I weakened and two plants went out yesterday but protected by fleece. Just as well if we had the hailstones here that I came through on the M3 today 😱😱

My tom's in the greenhouse are well away, but I'll give it a couple of weeks before planting surplus tomatoes outside, just in case.  Cheers,  Tony. :)

Yesterday I put all 12 of my tomato plants out for the first time overnight, this morning I had two that I thought I should rescue as they were looking really limp, all the rest are doing fine.  Fingers crossed the temperatures stay between 10 - 12 degrees, or above!!!

I'm on the verge of putting out my extra tomatoes.  Have got several inside which are showing fruits rather than flowers but am planning on  doing an in/out over the weekend and putting out for good by Wednesday.  Usually put the bush type outside and keep the cordons inside to sprawl... but I have so many of each this year goodness only knows where they will all end up!!

Normally I wait until early June but am seriously lacking space in the greenhouse and next week is looking like it'll turn very warm. So they'll be going out next week, fingers crossed no more cold nights!

Like Middlesexbloke I usually wait until the first week in June before planting out, but the day and night temperatures round here are both quite warm and the forecast is good for the next couple of weeks, so I chanced my arm on Friday and planted out 6 plants.  All look fine and dandy so far.  If need be, I can pop up with some fleece if the forecast changes.

I cracked today and put out another 6 tomato plants. The weather forecast for the week shows temperatures into the 20s in the day and above 10 at night. I have some fleece if things turn nasty but I reckon the weather will hold into June and beyond now.

All ours have been hardening off for the last ten days.

The score so far: -

12 in the greenhouse
18 just outside along one side of greenhouse
9 to chums so far
6 on a spare bit on garden at home
12 to go in growbags/pots out in the front
12 to go on The Patch (allotment)

15 on 'The Patch' now, and three more to chums...

The only toms I grow semi-outdoors are in a cold frame (my old faithful Red Alert, just about too big to keep the covers on now.)

I have however donated my 4 spare plants to my new neighbours who are complete novices, so I planted them in a couple of growbags left by the previous owners for them. They've gone straight from my GH into the open garden, and my neighbour's little tot plans to keep them watered with her little pink watering can.

Good luck to them (what's the betting they do better than mine?)  ::)  :)

I'm in Southampton and started planting out at the week-end. They've been hardened off for a week or so. Always do the baskets of tumblers and Sungold cordons first then chuck in more when I have time.
I grow everything outdoors using racks in the living room for seed germination then transferring to one of those zippy plastic things, then opening the zip, then taking out to harden off and even when my tomatoes went blue a few years ago they came back.
Tough as old boots. Tomatoes not me! :D
ps Don't forget to WATER if we get this heatwave......

I will probably put a dozen or so out over this weekend.
The rest of them will have to catch up first, another couple of weeks at least.
I have got approx 40 in total, spread over 3 types.

Miggs, what sort are they?

I just try and mix everything up; put lots in different positions and now want to know how chums here make their choices!

I have to confess here that I put mine out about three weeks ago in the back garden - which is reasonably sheltered. I had to take a risk as we were going away on hols and the greenhouses were getting rather crowded and would have been difficult for the "tomato sitter" to look after.

Pleased to say that I got away with it, despite a few cold nights early on, and they seem to be pulling away quite well.
