Too late to sow Borlotto beans?
« on: July 20, 2018, 16:14 »
Hello. I'm wondering whether it's worth sowing another batch of dwarf Borlotto beans for shelling and eating fresh (or dried)? Do you think there's enough summer left? I've already got some that are just starting to flower. I'm thinking of sowing in pots and popping them in the ground once I've lifted a few more potatoes to make room.
Thanks for any advice.

If you have the seeds and the space, I'd give it a go. I've just very optimistically sown another batch of dwarf beans, just in case we get a prolonged, warmer autumn.  I know day length can start to make a difference, but they certainly won't grow in the packet.

I've just planted out a batch of beans for drying - given the weather they haven't taken long to germinate and get to a decent size to go out.

July is still fine to sow borlotto type or french beans.
Borlotto are quick to germinate too, so will not be a problem sowing now.

Thanks everyone. They're in their pots and will hopefully be up in a few days :)

They always grow better in soil than in the packets 😉😉😊. It’s been such a funny year it’s worth trying anything . If the weather turns damp😂 before you have harvested the beans it would be worth cutting down the plant & moving it all into a warm dry place(if there are beans in the pods which I’m sure there will be)
