Raised bed query
« on: April 25, 2010, 19:11 »
I have got some raised beds for the first time.  Everything I have read has said that you grow plants close together in beds but if you do that don't you reduce the quantity of the crop?

You plant closer together to get a lot of slightly smaller veg rather than less slightly larger veg.  It all works out the same in the end.  Just plant closer and at equal distances between the veg and rows, in a square shape.  Choose veg that have a pointed, more upright shape rather than those that sprawl.
Cheese makes everything better.

I also just guess my spacings but that's because I've done this for a few years now.  It can be hard for a beginner to know what's best.  You learn from your failures as well as, or better than your successes.

As an example.....the first year I grew big cabbages too close together, and they didn't heart up very well :(

The next year I grew a smaller pointy cabbage, but still at the closer spacing...and this worked out much better, with proper heads of cabbage :)

So it is often worth choosing your varieties carefully ;)

Thanks very much, cleared that query up.  Popping in and praying is definitely my approach to gardening!

utilise every inch of your bed.iv'e got 6 long beds planted with over 900 onion sets (sturon).
they are planted 2 "apart.and as they grow and begin to bulb up together (august) i remove every other one and leave the rest until late september.
bare soil in a bed is an invite for weeds to take over.grow ya veg tight and smother the weeds out.

I agree blackbob, especially where onions are concerned!
Now then, I am a very pleasant lad from York.  I have a decent half plot on Holgate allotments.

6" between the rows and a good feed of fish blood and bone.switch over to high potash late july onwards to help ripen the bulbs off
