my hens aren't laying and some of them didnt even start and now the days are too short (even though they are POL).  My question is should stop feeding them layers pellets?  I give them a scatering of mixed corn each morning which they love and seem to prefure, do hens generally prefure mixed corn?

Yes they prefer mixed corn, don't feed it them in the mornings only give 1/2 hour before bedtime, helps keep them warm.

Keep feeding layers ad lib.

yes birds  are really seed eaters with a spattering of green stuff we substitute the pellst for the seed, you can just feed them layers until they start again or a basic feed pellet and seed ,which ever suits you ,you can reduce the layers and feed more base grains like wheat and barley and crushed maize if you wish

Ithink it takes an experienced keeper to succesfully mix a feed to keep their birds healthy and productive.  They need more thaan just mixed corn.  I'm not experienced so I stick to pellets.  There is an article in this months Practical Poultry about the pros and cons of mixing your own feed.

i'm keeping feeding layers pellets (the local farmers co-op doesn't seem to have anything else, though they are good at ordering stuff)

ours aren't laying  :? but i'm hoping they'll get the hint ('mmm these layers pellets are so tasty - hang on a minute, LAYERS PELLETS...maybe i should lay an egg?')
