Someting to go over the gate of the loty
« on: April 24, 2012, 12:21 »
Im thinking of cutting down some branches from a tree there big like this

I want to build like a (trellis? I think you call it) to make an arch with flowers, or maybe something edible ( that would be best I think) so you can walk under it, and it looks good as well, can you guys give me some ideas as to what to plant or even seed is better (and cheaper) obviously it wont look like a wigwam, but an arch when I put the sticks in (well that's the plan anyway)

My gate.. this was taken last year when i was doing a fence and gate, I had just got the plot

Permanent or annual?

Fruit, veg or flower?
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

If your site is as windy as ours, make sure whatever it is growing up is strong enough to withstand the wind, once it is covered with the plant growth, wind resistance is high.

Dense plants like honeysuckle might not be suitable then.

Thornless black berries or thornless logan berries might be good

Well, if veg, runner beans or tall peas?

if flowers, we had a couple of evergreen clematis when we lived in Essex, and it was quite windy where we lived and they were fine.  Some grew up the garage wall, the others were growing up a trellis that was in the middle of the garden.

Climbing roses?

Whatever you go for, I'd reiterate the comment from earlier in the thread, that the supports need to be strong enough.

Those branches from a tree aren't very strong, and I'd fear that they will fall over in the wind and will rot off at the base within a season or more.

If you're growing a permanent climber, you'll need something stronger and more permanent for it to grow up.

you could make the arch from split bamboo, last year we had two panels of the stuff where the wire rested away, giving us several thousand split bamboo 6 foot lengths, we found this was ideal to support netting with just both ends stuck in the ground, it would be easy to weave this into an arch over the gate.
