Building a big run - now ready
« on: January 28, 2012, 04:19 »
Hi everyone, im hoping to get some adive n opinions like always from here :)

Im building a big run 18ft by 12ft And 6 ft high, i'll be making panels first then put them together afterwards. Im going to use welded mesh, but should it be 1inch squared holes or half inch squared? And is 19g (1mm thick i think) going to be ok to keep foxes away? Run will be coverd with chicken wire from the top.. Dont think fox will get on top and chew the chicken wire instead of the welded mesh where it can reach on the floor..

At the moment the coop has got 19g and 1/2 inch holes i think n foxes not tried chewing that.

Any info would be appriciated?

Mo :)

Hi 1" x1/2" is ok, but yes foxes can climb and chew throgh chicken wire if they wanted to  :tongue2: if you google welded mesh wire there are a lot of sites that sell and deliver wire in large lenthes at half the cost of DIY centres, you can also get ready made pannels if you wanted for ease, because you are starting from new i would take the opertunaty and make your run mink proof aswell, good look  :D

Hello Mohz
I,ve spent many years rearing and putting to wood 10-11000 pheasants per year, in that time I had never had a fox in my release pens, The construction has always been the same
6ft high, bottom 14"-18" laid at right angles and buried, top14-18" hanging out and floppy.
Bottom roll 1"wire, top roll 1.1/2-2".

They dont like trying to climb loose wire, but will readily dig under and are very predictable in their ways which make them easy to control.

The only animal that chewed through any was a dog.
And if you are worried about Mink set a MK4 Fenn Trap in a 24" tunnel running parallel alongside the wire and check daily.
If you have a Vixen in the area early on in the year it will pull Dog foxes for miles.
Don't worry about Bagers they never cause any problems
And Hegehogs are one of the worst culprits for egg stealing.

You might want to consider sinking some netting around the edges where it is adjacent to soil,to stop foxes digging under.

You have a good sturdy/tidy looking run there. You must have more tolerant neighbours than I do with regards to the cockerel. We have an elderly chicken that has started crowing which isn't as loud as a cockerel and they still complain. We have to put a blackout on the coop in the summer when it's light very early.
You also have a good mix of chickens by the look of it.

Very impressed! I wish I'd had the forethought to make a walk-in.

Good sturdy weldmesh - where did you get it and what spec? It looks much stronger than mine so I may upgrade if I opt to expand.

You deserve a pat on the back for effort, especially that last day!!
