We used to have evening primrose round the pond, it grew happily without disturbance for about 7 years, then nothing, nowhere to be seen in the garden.  I looked out the window yesterday and there's a 4ft tall evening primrose plant growing away happily nowhere near the pond behind a holly bush; clever plant  

So my questions are, a)  If I collect the seed would they germinate?  b)  When would I collect them?

The seed pods will ripen and split to scatter the seeds. When the first ones begin to split remove the ripe pods from the plant and place in a paper bag.

The seeds are small. Usually seedlings appear everywhere and need hoeing out. Left to their own devices seedlings appear in late Summer to overwinter and flower next Summer so I imagine that if you sow the seeds now they will grow. They do not transplant easily as they have a deep tap root so either sow in modules or direct where you want them.
