Trouble with a patch of lawn...
« on: October 23, 2010, 18:13 »
I've taken on a bit of land from my girlfriend's parents and in one corner there's a medium size patch of VERY spongy grass.  It's bright green, slightly mossy in part but I've dug down a spades depth and the soil seems perfectly fine.  But in most of the lawn it's very bouncy, almost like a bed pillow or cushion.  It's not boggy at all, just very much like a dry bath sponge.  Any ideas what's going on?

Cheers!

i agree with mum. We have very springy grass because of soooo much moss. when we dug down it is very sandy dry soil . It is a dream to dig after our previous grden(pure clay)
However it still needs lots of manure to put the goodness back in. Keep digging and muck spreading over the winter and it will be wonderful next year. good luck xxxx

You can hire a scarifier or scrounge one off freecycle that'l get all that moss out

yes but it works for grass too. If you allow the moss to stay it will ruin wateva grass you are trying to grow.

You need to get rid of all the moss etc to start again and you will need to manure it to make it better for the new grass/flowers/veg to grow.

Before scarifying make SURE you kill the moss first, or you will spread it everywhere.
