Lily growers beware
« on: May 05, 2018, 16:08 »
Today I found the first horrid red lily beetles  >:( Duly squashed!.........3 hours later there were more of the blighters, also now squashed  ::)

It would be really nice to actually see some flowers this year, for goodness sake!

It's some years since I had lilies in my garden, due to the lily beetle.  It started with a few, but I couldn't keep up with the squashing of the little blighters. They seemed to breed faster than my fingers could work, and having to deal with the piles of poo that they excrete all over the lilies was extremely unpleasant.  Eventually all of my lilies succumbed to the constant attacks.  However..............I have just found one lonely lily in my garden.  I don't have a clue what sort it is, but the leaves aren't the same as the Regal lilies that I love, but more like one of the Asian ones.  It must have regenerated from a tiny piece of corm, so I hope it gets to the flowering stage so I can identify it.

We had a splurge of them last time there was a sunny spell, and now there are more around. our lilies are planted near the back door so whenever we go out the red devils can be spotted and duly despatched. Without that, the leaves are reduced to slimy tatters

Thanks for the warning.  I've only got a couple and I checked them today at about 7am.  Fortunately nothing, but will keep checking.  Mrs Bouquet
