How to identify shrubs
« on: June 11, 2017, 11:19 »
Now this might sound like a really silly question but... what is the best way to identify garden shrubs and plants? The new house we have bought must have at least 15 different well established shurubs. I could tell you this there are a couple of roses but that is it  as I have purely been a 'food' gardener previously. ::)

Is there a good website or book? Or is the best solution to take lots of photos and ask people?

Bring it on - it'll be fine

If you want to do a wider shot of 3 or 4 shrubs together so we can see the overall growth habit, then individual photos of a few leaves so we can see the detail, that should do it  :)

With smaller plants its easy to get close enough to show the detail as will as the whole plant, but with shrubs the pictures can just be anonymous green blobs  ;)

I have been trying for over half an hour to get pics on and it's just not having it!! I've been using the rather laborious method of copying code from photobucket, 2 pics per post but it keeps telling me the server isn't responding. Is there an easier way to post pictures yet from iPhones/iPads on this forum?

That may be Photobucket rather than the forum.  They are no longer allowing 3rd party hosting for free.  I've just tried to load a picture into a post and it won't work for me, but I've done it loads of times in the past.  We are going to have to amend our advice for uploading pictures, but in the meantime, if you have your photos accessible in photo stream or a pictures file, you can upload them to our gallery here :

Once they are approved, you can add a link to a post.  Hope that helps  :)

That makes sense - glad I'm not going crazy! I've trialled it out with 2 pics so will see if that works before adding them all!

Yes, I find it a real nuisance not to be able to do this any more!

No, its from the gallery on here.  I meant just copy and paste the image code like you would if it were on PBucket.  It won't embed, but it will create a link  :)

Thanks New Shoot. It is a very long winded route and another way will have to be found before I go doo-lally haha.

So plant 2 - is about 7-8ft  tall

With these flowers

Plant 3:

Short bushy plant no flowers I have seen

Plant 4:
Big bushy plant 'flowers' quite obvious on this one

Trickier Ones now as less distinct.

Plant 5:

Big bush (7ft tall). Leaves quite glossy

Leaves up close

Plant 6:

This has been growing under a very tall and out of control buddleia (this buddleia is over 10/11ft!). It has a very wooden main stem like a young tree but looks old and gnarled

Leaves up close

No. 4 looks like an astilbe.
No.6 looks a bit like my hibiscus leaf
