Poorly Skimmia
« on: April 05, 2017, 18:45 »
or the last 30 years I have had a Skimmia, which has survived the odds on my 1ft of chalk, and I have twice yearly fed with Epsom Salts.  Last year I confess it wasn't done.
A friend suggested buying Sequestrian, is there any advantage over this to the Salts.
Advice Please, regard, Mrs Bouquet

Use the Epsom salts as it will be faster acting especially if used as a foliar feed. Sequestrian is an old name for ericaceous feed, and it's more expensive than Epsom salts.
Hope that helps.

Skimmias do prefer a slightly acidic soil and so adding some sulphur chips around the roots may well help. Epsom salts help with Magnesium uptake in the short term, especially as a foliar feed, but the sulphur may give a longer term support

Thanks for your replies.  I have fed it today with a 'Miracle' feed for acid lovers and the box states Skimmia, so today I have drenched the roots and when the sun went in a folia feed,  I have got Epsom Salts (which it normally gets) so shall I feed that to the plant now - like tomorrow ?  thanks Mrs Bouquet

Sunshineband, what are sulphur chips, that's a new one on me.  I've got some log fire ashes, does that count ?

Log fire ashes will provide some Potash so will help with flowering.

You can buy sulphur chips here, but I tend to look around and usually use an ebay seller for cheapness. Less faff to use chips than powdered sulphur as they don't blow about when using them lol
