New Zealand flatworm
« on: March 28, 2017, 15:46 »
The guy on the plot alongside mine said he found two NZ flatworms when lifting areas he had covered with old carpet for the winter. I didn't know such a thing existed. Should I be worried?

He works for the local parks dept so as a professional he should know what they are. Apparently they are the colour of orange peel and look like a flatworm otherwise. He had killed them both so i didn't see them but i can,t see him making it up. He said they eat earthworms, and have been a problem in the west of Scotland for some time. Has any body else come across them?

I've heard of them but not seen them, but some earthworms are very flattened when they have been underneath things, I think you have to notify somewhere if you get them!

This afternoon I was tidying up moving pots etc and I came across one on the soil surface under a pot.. Just over an inch long, orange in colour and quite flat. Even flatter now!
Just for your  information.

I think, those will be Australian FWs, which you are likely to encounter, if any, in the southern parts of the UK. The other is most likely to appear in wetter parts, Ireland, Scotland. Overly worried you need not be, apparently.

Thanks JimB. Found two more today on my neighbour's plot so have sent them as you requested to Mike Lole. Be interested to see what he makes of them. The plot thickens.
