Fungus root strands invading beds
« on: March 17, 2017, 17:16 »
My plot is near a wild area with trees. I weeded a lot of it and found these thin, dark, elastic strands which, when broken open, reveal a lighter interior. It sounded like honey fungus so I dug a lot of it out. I don't think it is as there are several trees, including a mini orchard. I took a picture of the mushrooms yet I can't identify them.

However, I now dig it out each year yet now it has invaded my raised beds. It forms a dense mate under the soil, so thick it's an effort to dig it out with a fork.

Now I know we need fungi to do it's thing but it's becoming a little invasive. It'll also be robbing my nutrients.

Any advice? I've loamy soil, ph 7-ish

Are you sure it's not just tree roots?
I used to have to dig roots out of my raised beds in the garden every year, because pruning roots (by digging them out) just makes them grow back thicker  :(

I had to feed and water more than usual to make up for what the roots were taking, but still grew lots of veg  :)

Me and another dude took a handful and rubbed them together and they smelled like mushrooms.

Some roots do smell when damaged.

Can you trace the 'strands' back to see where they come from?

Could they be mycorrhizae on the roots?

I can't trace them back but they do lead to what were wild cherry trees which were felled a few years ago. These stumps now display the fruiting bodies of the fungi. I've removed the roots before. They crept into my compost bay and my plot before.

It could be mycorrhizal yet it's so dense i can happily do without it. It's taken me a day to oust it from one corner of a raised bed. At the same time I evicted a lot of wireworm that had gone through my spuds lat year.

Before I took over this plot 7 years ago it was derelict and a dump. No one wanted it. I might be realising why.

Unfortunately the link only worked once then I couldn't see the photos again, however, I noticed on one pic there's a cobweb like veil over the gills of what might be a younger fruit body which could lead to it being a member of the Cortinarius family. Possibly your fungus is Cortinarius Balaustinius.
Hope this helps.

How can I kill it?

Or at least control it. I don't want to sound like a fungi philistine nor do I want to destroy every trace of nature on my plot but it has become invasive.

I went no-dig to nurture my soil yet the roots are taking over.

Can you dig a trench between your plot & where it originates, then put in a thick plastic barrier& backfill. Hard work but should stop its spread towards your nondig beds
