Title: Onions that multiply?
Post by: Oliveview on November 13, 2008, 22:32
We have some onions growing that just multiply themselves all the time.  We inherited them when we moved here.  They are not like spring onions nor normal onions, the bulb is more straight up and down, hope this makes sense!  They just grow in clumps multiplying all the time,
The locals use them for tortillas.  They are quite strong, (onions not the locals   ) Any suggestions on a name or type of onion?

I've got some of those.  My plot neighbour Vic game me some. They are a bit like spring onions but they grow in bunches and the white bit is straight like ramrod spring onions rather than the bulb type.

Vic calls the perpetual onions. They grow all year and if you break them up they grow into separate bunches so you get lots of other bunches from a few small plants.

They taste ok, a bit earthy, great cooked but a bit rough in salads.

Unfortunately I don't have a clear picture of them and I don't have a name either.  Magic onions?

DEFINATELY WELSH ONIONS , THEY GROW IN A BUNCH , THIN THEM OUT TO ABOUT 5-6 IN EACH BUNCH , YOU WILL HAVE VERY STRONG ONIONS FOREVER , ALLWAYS TAKE THE ONES YOU WANT TO EAT FROM THE OUTSIDE EDGE ,

We were given a small bunch in March this year, and were told they were Welsh Onions.  Planted up in two and three's and today have a full bed of about twenty bunches.  I used the stems like chives, and they were delicious, and then the main part in anything that needs onion. Every time I dig up a bunch, I plant a few back and then I find another allotment holder that can use some.  They seem to grow like the clappers!!!!

Perennial Welsh onions do not have seeds, well, ours don't.

The one with the blue flowers sounds like being garlic chives. Annual - it is not really, but so grown as quality deteriorates with years apperantly - Welsh onions will produce seeds, but then they are a different thing, look more like chives.

I had a look on t'internet and there are so many types of these perennial onions and 'they hybridise readily' quote ............so IMHO it looks as if there's no way of 100% identifying what you have growing.
It either suits you and you grow it or you dig it up.........or is that too easy

Very much so, even the quoted garlic chives would be as a species white flowered, you can get them all sorts of colour though as they cross-breed readily,  a blue flowered one will be a hybrid, certainly, don't know how good to eat, only have seen them in ornamental garden catalogues before this post.

But then, lawn chamomile is also sold by nurseries, when it also does not set seed, they just selling somewot else.

But Richy should know a load more about this issue. 8)

Hope someone finds the right answere. I have grown them for the last 9 years got them from an old chap on the site he had no idea what they were. He just called them spreading spring onions. I find then to be quite strong but fine in small amounts in a salad. The best i can come up with is in the earlier reply but not 100% sure would like to find out after all this time.
