Comfrey - use of?
« on: April 30, 2007, 15:44 »
Hi all
Read on the forum that comfrey can be placed underneath potatoes to give them a good start.  I inherited some comfrey with my recently acquired allotment but know little about its benefits.  How much do I use? Do I just strip the leaves or is it mixed in liquid? Questions, questions......... I need to lay down  :?

DJB

Hi DJ, you can just strip the leaves and put them under things like potatoes etc.  You can also add them and their flowers to the compst heap as it acts as a compost activator, and you can also soak the leaves in water for a couple of weeks and dilute the liquid as it can be quite strong (smelly too!!).

Here is a link to John's wonderful comfrey article which we have all read at some time.

Ooo - you are quick today GA.

One word of warning djbnat - is you are using the leaves in any way which buries them, be sure to wilt first ... it has an amazing tendency to regrow from the bottoms of the stalks.

One last thing - do not try to dig up your comfrey plant since every piece of broken root will regrow.

I've just bought some comfrey as it seems to be the magic ingredient to compost etc, but wondered if I should grow it in a large pot as it sounds like it is such a vandal when it gets going.  What do you think?

It will fare badly in pots since it has a very deep tap root.   It is not a vandal; it is merely big.   Just don't try to dig it up.

2ft spacing either way in a permanent bed, full sun preferred, partial shade tolerated.
