Avian Influenza H5 confirmed in Suffolk
Defra has today confirmed Avian Influenza in turkeys on a premises near Diss on the Norfolk/Suffolk border after preliminary tests were positive for the H5 strain. The premises also contain ducks and geese. All birds on the premises will be slaughtered.

Full confirmation of results, including whether or not this is H5N1 and whether the strain is high or low pathogenic will follow.

A 3km Protection Zone and a 10km Surveillance Zone are being established around the Infected Premises. Inside these zones bird movements will be restricted and all birds must be housed or otherwise isolated from contact with wild birds. We are also urgently considering with ornithological and other experts what wider measures may be needed.

All poultry keepers on the GB Poultry Register will be notified, and the EU Commission has been informed.

CONTACT DEFRA FOR FURTHER INFORMATION ON SYMPTOMS AND PRECAUTIONS NEEDED

i spoke to defra late this afternoon, we come under the 2nd zone and my 12 chooks and 2 ducks have got to be kept in or under cover.

will be putting up a gazebo tomorrow and putting a fence around so at least they can have some daylight and fresh air.

seems everso cruel but it has to be done.

It's obviously been brought in by wild birds this time so a wise precaution to keep the wild birds out.  You can use netting on the sides. A bit like a fruit cage with a roof

It's so sad when they start culling any animals - even if they were destined for the table this is just a total waste, even if needed.

I just hope the press don't whip up a general panic again. We're all going to die nonsense.

To all those affected - fingers crossed it's not for long for you

is going to look like a giant bird cage, on the upside, it will give the rest of thier garden a chance to grow some new shoots for them to eat when they get out of solitary confinement

Hi all My chickens are all in a fenced in and it's only a little hen house, could I not put netting all over the top to stop the wild birds getting in the  run? I also heard on the t.v ast night that if we cant get the chooks in. Then make sure the chooks food and water are in the coop.
Would any of this do or not??

It's better to be over the Hill than under it!!
