  • Hey Ho Lets Grow!
Recent topic on the homebrew thread reminded me of this question.
Had a bit of bother getting hold of sloes this year so I'm thinking of planting a few on the plot hedge and perhaps a bit of guerilla planting nearby as well. From a quick search here it seems growing from seeds is probably going to be too tedious and the results may be unreliable.

So, bearing in mind I just had to buy a new dishwasher today and money is now tight...and I'm thinking of getting quite a lot of new plants... what's the best way to propagate? Night time raid on a hedge to lift some 'suckers' or night time raid to take some cuttings? If cuttings, are they relatively simple to get to root?

(By using the words 'night time raid' I'm not advocating anything illicit - as neighbour has a hedge he's happy for me to take from)
 ;)

Have a look to see if there are any suckers that you should be able to lift with a few roots on - that's the easiest way IMO

Watch out for Sons of Suckers then...the stuff on my boundary grows 4ft/year. For nearly no sloes.

And yes, they root with a ready will and a glad heart. Yours might be less so in a few years.  :)

yeah, hence the thought of mostly guerilla gardening to 'restock' the local hedges. Council decimated some round here a few years ago - so I'm thinking mostly for those places really.

Thanks for the advices y'all

I see you've embraced guerrilla gardening!  ;) I would loved to have picked some sloes this year but unless it comes with a label telling me what it is I'm dubious as my detective skills and deduction skills are severely lacking.

I'm rubbish at foraging, having never been shown what I'm supposed to be looking for/places to find anything I'm always worried I'll decide to harvest something that isn't suitable for human consumption.

We have tried lifting suckers every year and the damn things wont take. I have a three foot high sucker that needs moving but I am reluctant if its going to die on me.  :(

We got ours from lidl £2.49 for ten bare roots.

We picked up fourty and 38 survived.

I don't do a great deal of foraging - certainly not fungi - anyhow I think that sloes are amongst the easiest to recognise:

https://www.google.co.uk/search?q=google+sloe+bush&client=firefox-a&hs=Yrd&rls=org.mozilla:en-GB:official&channel=sb&source=lnms&tbm=isch&sa=X&ei=JPJIVPamHonJPNvEgdAF&ved=0CAkQ_AUoAg&biw=1366&bih=622

The fruit looks a little like small damsons - and the thorns are quite something too...
If you did find any you could always take a photo and ask?

I'm going to have a quick scout down at the harbour side, I'm hoping they'll be some hidden in the hedgerows. :)

Thanks Balders

I found this post yesterday evening, I'm going to pop up there tomorrow but after having a chat with my sister this morning this place may have already been raided by several of her staff

Good luck then...
I grubbed up some plants this afternoon - might try one in a very big pot... the others will be guerilla'd.
Should be worth it - the sloe gin I got going a couple of weeks ago looks REALLY tempting...  ;)
