Broad Beans
« on: March 21, 2015, 20:05 »
My Broad beans planted in the polytunnel in October are covered in flowers (the smell is fantastic) Now I know there are no bees around so do I have to hand pollinate . I keep tapping the supports, but to do it with a brush would take all day

Well I have been opening the polytunnel doors both ends during this sunny weather and today I spotted a bumble bee about 100 yards away so I am hoping that maybe one or two will have been looking for beans !

I've spotted a few bees and butterflies on days where the sun comes out, so fingers crossed Dave.

the smell is fantastic

I bet  ;)  and that lovely smell will attract any nearby bees in  :)

I have been thinking the early beans were going to be a lost cause the lower flowers dying and no beans , BUT  at close up tonight 2 huge bubble bees all over the bean flowers so hopefully pollination in progress

I too have spotted some bumble bees in the polytunnel.  Though given the temperatures in there at the moment - I'm surprised they have the energy to move.

Err, the saying here is

Patience is a virtue,
Catch it if you can.
Often seen in women,
Never in a man. ::) ::)

Glad you have the beans showing. :)
