I have a microwaveable plastic pad.  You microwave it for 6 mins, and it stays warm all day.  It's for cats and dogs to sleep with normally.  The chooks have a wind shelter built on an old pallet.  I plan to put the disc under the pallet on really cold days, to take the chill off.  I am hoping it might stop the water freezing as well.

I will report back if it works.

Hi Susie B - this sounds great - does it work and if so, where did you get it from?

Over the weekend we had temps down to -20C.  The water was freezing over in less than 20 mins (including my drains - cue nasty backflow of water when the dishwasher was running!  )

The girls didn't seem to mind so much, and I would guess got any moisture they needed from the snow.  But they aren't eating or drinking very much at the minute - and apparantly, living under my connifer is preferable to staying in the coop lol.

You could try this frost-free liquid, it's cheap and is also safe for wildlife unlike some products. I used it this winter for my birdbath. It kept my water in a liquid state all winter!  :D

I got it here:

You can drop the freezing temperature by adding almost anything. This sounds like a salt (need not be sodium chloride) as it only protects to minus six. Whilst it might not be poisonous in a birdbath, if you use it as the only source of drinking water for chooks then this will cause them problems with electrolyte balance. They do need quite large quantities of water so will take in large quantities of the solution. Best avoided for chooks.

Too true ehs you've got to keep them electrolytes balanced and in any case using this product will cost a fortune if you have any number of birds (about 55p per gallon) to protect to just -6 degrees.  Hardly worth it when you could just get the MIL to breathe on it..
