How to stop water freezing?
« on: December 18, 2009, 11:35 »
Logged on here expecting there to be a thread on the go, but can't fine one.  Does that mean you all know something I don't? :D

Don't have power that far down the garden, so can't use an electric heater.

Any suggestions please, ice is forming as I type :(

I am no expert and don`t have the problem as i can knock ice off water and refill with warm, but if i did i would cover water with polystyrene box after chooks went to bed and remove before they are let out, just a thought no doupt you will get varied opinions on this---Fred

In this weather I've been taking the water in at night, to stop it freezing solid.  So they get fresh (warm) water every morning.  But it's so cold here, high up in Lancs hills, that the water is freezing over, and it's going to get worse I'm sure!

I can keep going out and refreshing it with warm, but hoped there'd be an easier way.

As I work from home I swap mine over at lunch times and always bring it in to stop it freezing solid.

I have a microwaveable plastic pad.  You microwave it for 6 mins, and it stays warm all day.  It's for cats and dogs to sleep with normally.  The chooks have a wind shelter built on an old pallet.  I plan to put the disc under the pallet on really cold days, to take the chill off.  I am hoping it might stop the water freezing as well.

I will report back if it works.

Adding alcohol to water lowers the freezing point but I don't suppose you want a load of chickens staggering around the place holding their heads!

Obviously the deeper the water the longer it will take to freeze; it is possible to buy electric heaters normally used to stop ponds completely freezing over but you might not want to go to that much trouble.
Sow your seeds, plant your plants. What's the difference? A couple of weeks or more when answering possible queries!

I have two water pots. One I fill in the house and take out with me and bring to frozen one back in to the house to de-frost and wash out later.

This works ok if you only have the odd water pot - wouldn't like to try it with too many :)

Bit of an old wives tale that I'm afraid :)  It's never really been proved.
