Starry starry night

Nope this aint another Song Link up thread

Had the pleasure of being invited to Preston Astronomical Society dark site last Friday night, it is up in the hills of the Bowland Forrest. The journey there was to say a bit of a botty twitcher  -3 temps on country lanes (some steep) that hadnt been gritted, however I made it safe and sound, upon opening the door and looking up  was open jawed , although not dark adapted I could clearly see the milky way and what a site, I reached for the binoculars and just scanned the sky, nothing in particular just sweeping around. M31 the Andromeda galaxy was visible to my eyes without any aid.
Ten mins later and Nigel the first member turned up so we set our scopes up and started to look at certain  targets for this time of they year and it was just stunning to see them without any light pollution, having said that it is now noticable the hue being created by LED street lighting, this is giving off a blueish light, at least with sodium we could filter it out but as it stands we have nothing for LED and it appears to be worse!
Anyway cracking night that I really enjoyed despite the freezing temps.

Glad to hear there are still some dark places left for you to enjoy  :)

That's the one thing I remember from Greek Island night skies, so dark that the stars were really clear and often saw shooting stars.
