B****y rain
« on: July 24, 2009, 13:32 »
It's hardly stopped raining this week, yesterday was glorious, today more rain!

Tomorrow is plot judging day. unable to weed and tidy  ;)
The answer lies in what you put into the ground!

We have had about 3 inches of rain since about 10 this morning. Just 2 quick downpours, but boy did it chuck it down. My back yard was full up to the doorstep! Cat thought of going out when it briefly stopped, but quickly changed her mind, halfway through the cat flap :D
I've had to go out to empty the water trays under peppers and toms before they floated away

We've had rain vertually every day throughout July here up north, and not just normal rain, it's been binning down so hard we stand at the window in amazement, then we get a bit of sun, then more rain...I've so many jobs to do, onions need lifting and drying, seedlings to plant out, strawberrys need tidying up, gooseberrys so ripe they falling off, weeds everywhere..........

I'm a bit worried about my potatoes, I wanted to leave them in the ground and dig up as needed but with all this rain I'm worried rot may set in, but they are in raised beds so the drainage is good, I have 50 or more plants so would hate to loose them at this late stage, am I right to be worried about the rain or should I chill out and have a can of stout ?  ::)

Will you lot quit hogging the rain and send it here!  My lawn is cracking from dryness. Got a light drizzle this morning after weeks of nothing, but we could use so much more rain.

Well it looks like our rain has gone away for the moment, after some tremendous stormy showers yesterday. Maybe they're coming your way Trillium!

Heavy showers were threatened for two days last week and all I got at the allotment was a dusting. Last time it rained it was so hard that all the water ran off and ended up down hill in the river which escaped its banks.

Couple of days of drying winds and it was a case of out with the watering can again. I must admit that today looks more promising as it's the steady rain that sinks in.

Not good for the farmers who want things to ripen, not the BBQ summer that we were promised and I'd just settle for sunshine and showers on a regular basis. It would do the late July sowings no end of good.

So what happened to the heatwave we were promised?i remember reading that the government health line was predicting upto 15000 OAP deaths due to the heat, more likely to drown i reckon.
