I'm in need of a wall mounted milk bottle holder with a lid, thirsty rodents had 4 out of 5 pints last week 

I saw this which looked ok but it's no longer available, it looks mainly like flat bar with a few scrolls welded in. I've not done any metal work since school but I guess mild steel could be silver soldered and a vice and hammer would do the rest ?

Have you thought about using one of those  oblong hanging basket holders you see in garden centres .
You could modify with wood either glued in place or with self tapping screws or nut and bolts.
On your original idea.
I have my doubts that silver solder would give a strong enough joint it really needs welding.
Look on the net for steel fabricators local to you, they should be able to manufacture you one at a reasonable cost.

As a temporary solution have you thought about using a upside down bucket on top of the bottles with something like a brick on top to keep it in place.

They were definitely teeth not beak marks in the foil, and the bottle had been knocked over 1 day so something with size, I did consider squirrels too.

At the moment I have a large lidded recycling crate out there but someone is concerned about the aesthetics (not me I hasten to add) otherwise Id have just ordered something like this ....

That is exactly what we use to have to stop the squirrels when I was a boy, and what I was going to suggest but could not find one on ebay when I looked

Go to your local fabricators in the business park, they would love to make a bespoke one as a challange and a change from the big stuff.

Look on freecycle for a free broken fridge. You could store all sorts of things in it.
