I freeze unused swede, not blanched, in chunks.

You can just store them in the shed, but they do get a bit shrivelled round the edges.

Would a sand clamp work for storing swedes?

I am referring to a plastic lidded container with clean dry sand with the root veg in layers, not touching each other, stored in an unheated garage or shed.

According to the RHS

To prevent shrivelling in vegetables which lose moisture such as carrots, celeriac, swedes and beetroot, store the roots in layers of moist sand or peat-substitute in boxes, in a frost-free, dark place such as a shed or cellar.

If the sand is moist, I guess it is really important to keep it frost-free then. I would expect it to cause rot and freeze if it was wet.
