Tomatoes, knuckling off? bud drop?
« on: June 23, 2015, 10:36 »
My 83 yr old allotment mentor has a problem with his Shirley tomatoes. The buds are dropping off at the first knuckle. He is a very experienced grower but does not know what is causing this. All his other varieties of toms are ok. Any suggestions please.

I would guess at a pollination problem.  He hasn't patted their heads enough?  :)

They do not need their heads patting yet as they are not opened, just tight buds.

Flower abortion is likely to be due to some form of stress, possibly either too hot during the day or too cold at night (or both.)

Are the affected plants in an area which may be providing slightly more extreme conditions than the others?
Sow your seeds, plant your plants. What's the difference? A couple of weeks or more when answering possible queries!

Agree with JayG, last year I had a couple or three days when the temperature in the greenhouse got to 50C and I ended up with loads of aborted flowers.

This year the weather has been kinder (i.e. not so hot) but its cold at night so I'm expecting more catfacing & zippering on my beefsteaks.

It can also be caused if the plants are too dry and a gentle misting with luke warm water can help.

Thank you everyone for your replies.
I doubt it is lack of water as he is inclined to over water in my opinion, he stands the pots on a mesh above a trough which catches all the excess water that runs out of the bottom of the pots.
It is strange that it has only affected the Shirleys and not his other plants, he is also growing money maker, sweet million and gardeners delight.
