Onions
« on: September 11, 2009, 11:40 »
I'm going to grow onions "next year" but people go on about planting in autumn to overwinter. Is this just Japanese varieties or can it be don with all sorts? Normally I'd be looking at March/April, the same time as my shallots.

Think you missed the point there Peter.

"Japanese" or winter onions are different varieties to those you usually stick in Scribbler. you wouldn't be able to get those sort at this time of year anyway. Those varities have been well covered in other threads.

Mine will be going in next month. They mature before the others, about June time, but can be used well before that. The generally don't store as well, but are a good filler in.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

Be prepared for most of them to bolt (go to seed) - mine always do so have given up growing autumn types now. Any hints to prevent this anyone?

What varieties, when do you plant, what soil type etc...

I get one or two bolt, but in the main they're fine.

Mine were fine too, only a couple blown. Just snap the heads off and use those first.  ;) Still eating them now TBH.
