Insect Spray - help please
« on: April 21, 2011, 10:47 »
I have just discovered a huge family of earwigs living inside the buds of my clematis, and the plant is devoured.   (This was at 11pm last night)  every single remaining bit of the plant was covered in them.
OH googled, and came up with a Bifenthrin based spray to be used at night.  Can anybody tell me what spray to go and buy as I cannot read the small print very well.  Thanks,  Mrs Bouquet

Don't head for the spray,  expensive. . . poke a couple of short bamboo canes in the ground near the plant, loosely fill a plant pot with hay and invert on top of each cane.  The earwigs will take up residence and each morning remove the pots and shake them out into salty water, replace the pots and wait till tomorrow.   Cheers,   Tony.
I may be growing OLD, but I refuse to grow UP !

Bifenthrin has been banned Mrs B  ::)

the updated  RHS site says
Quote
If damage is extensive, spray at dusk on mild evenings when earwigs are likely to be active with deltamethrin (Bayer Sprayday Greenfly Killer) or lambda cyhalothrin (Westland Plant Rescue Fruit & Vegetable Bug Killer)

Thanks for your help.   I have just read info from the US about how folk there deal with european earwigs.
Roll up some newspaper and soak in water, leave overnight, and then tip them out into salty or soapy water.
Pierce the tops of plastic cartons, ie: spread, butter etc, and mix water, and few drops of tuna oil (from a can) a squirt of soap and a piece of fruit or something sweet.
Somebody else, adapted this mix to 1 tbsn each of vegetable oil. molasses, and soy sauce and placed 2 cartons around affected clematis and next morning, both cans were FULL of them.

So I shall try a few of these ideas, and let you know what happens.  Cheers, Mrs B

It worked the pots with the mix in, this morning 19 earwigs all dead, and the other pot full of dead ants - Hurrah.  regards, Mrs B

Yes, the pot of oil and yogurt remains and soy sauce definitely works.   This morning there were about 50 earwigs in the pot.    I am going into mass production very shortly     Mrs Bouquet
