Manure
« on: March 16, 2018, 13:34 »
Posting here as this is the only plce I can find the post new topic button.

Talking to another plot holder who said they leave manure tied in plastic bags on their plots for year or two.

Wondering what the benefit is?

I empty the bags out and make one pile then cover with plastic or dump it into raised beds and cover with black plastic for the winter. Wondering if I am not doing it wrong.

I collect horse manure twelve months of the year about 15 cwt per load we stack it on the allotment for twelve months then spread it  on the plot as we have two plots  I'm making a new heap on the other plot for the following autumn or twelve months time

we usually cover the heap till its time to spread the manure and although its quite a high heap it soon starts to rot down and  so we need  to keep the poly sheet tight or it will be in the field next door  :D

never had a problem with the horse muck when its well rotted down hope this helps

Keeping it in a tied up poly bag will actually slow down decomposition, manure needs air to rot down successfully.
So stack it to store it, just cover it to stop if getting too wet but not tightly enough to stop air getting in, is the best way.
If it's not too fresh in autumn you can put it straight onto beds, cover with weed control plastic and leave the worms to work it in for you :)
