Espalier cherry sprouting branches.
« on: May 19, 2017, 20:02 »

Good evening everyone,

my espalier cherry is sprouting small but elongated branches from the laterals.  Do I remove them now or later when pruning the whole tree/shrub?

Looking forward to reading your knowledgeable reply/replies.

Cheers,  Tony.

Most sites say that fan shapes are better than espaliers.
But this site does mention the sub laterals
Quote
cropping will follow, mainly on one year-old wood. Once that wood has carried a crop, it needs to be cut out to make room for the new one year-old wood. The best time to do this is not during the winter months, but immediately after the crop has been picked. If any sub laterals develop, cut them back to 3 to 4 inches, if there is room available.

Too late, it's espalierated!  I didn't read anything about which form was better, and the shape is best for the situation.  Now, about those shoots?

Cheers,  Tony.

I,ve not had a crop as yet of my 2 year old tree but hopefully it will come good next year.
