I aim to sow late March/Early April. That way you avoid the worst of the dreaded pea moth. If you've got short rows, you might consider covering with fine mesh at flowering time.

Put the mesh on at the first sign of a flower bud. Take it off when all flowers have finished.

Pea moths lay their eggs at the base of the flowers and the caterpillar bores its way in when the embryo pods are tiny and soft. Once the pods get bigger they are too tough for the caterpillars to bore in.

I only trust debris netting for pigeons! Safer to use Enviromesh (or similar) or fleece to keep things like pea moth & carrot fly out.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

when I have planted directly into the ground, the mice/voles have eaten them so have to faff with trays in the greenhouse.

Thank you for the photo D.D., I see, (or, I think I see!), that you are using "fine twine", (garden string?), and canes, I was going to purchase some "baler twine", but seeing your photo, I am going to copy it. Is the vertical spacing approx 6" please?. My first row has 1/4" metal mesh surrounding it, the next row, which is just coming through, (I hope :D), I will do with string and plastic mesh, (when I obtain some). Thank you. arh.

It's quite fine polypropylene twine, "string", jute etc. is not much good as it sags when it gets wet and lacks the support. Spacing is pretty much random as it's done on a "when I can do it" basis and is subject to how much they've grown.

"It's quite fine polypropylene twine, "string""

Great result Dave!

This twine is cheap and well available on Ebay, and you can reuse it time and time again!

Agree about jute too, nice but not lasting!
