DD - sweetcorn chitting yet?
« on: April 22, 2014, 11:55 »
Hi DD,

Are you chitting your sweetcorn yet? Have had a trawl but can't see anything... I usually wait a week or two after you to do mine  :D

Ta,

First ones potted up here:

and I can report that they have started to emerged from the compost today!
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

My sweet corn is 6 inches tall in their deep root trainers.

As seems to suit my set up, my sweet corn will be sown in peat pots at the weekend, in a heated propagator, and straight out to the greenhouse as soon as they show.... ETA last day of April. Roughly about 100 in total, in two batches, 5 or 6 days apart.
As for chitting sweet corn ? I have never seen the need. Too much faff for my liking. :nowink:

There's far less faff in throwing 100 sweetcorn seeds into a sandwich box with a bit of moist kitchen towel than there is getting 100 environmentally unfriendly peat pots into environmentally unfriendly heated propagators!

Completely forgot about chitting the sweetcorn! Will do that tomorrow, on a plate in between 2 layers of wet kitchen paper towel in the airing cupboard like last year. Worked well for me anyway! Am going for Lark again as they were amazing last year. Does anyone have a good variety to recommend?

I'm still trying not to think about starting sweetcorn. My OH was looking at the packet instructions yesterday and trying to egg me on.

What's the lowest night-time temperature for germinating sweetcorn?

Thank you tillyt, may try that variety next year for a change. Lark gave us loads of big, juicy cobs last year, I think they were the best crop of 2013  :). I'm sure the hot July helped. Fingers crossed for some warmth this summer.

Thanks for this thread, I have been wondering if the time is now right for sweet corn... but I am surprised you have sown your runners, DD. I won't be sowing mine for a while yet.

I'm a whole 3 days earlier than last year! They'll go outside in a day or two, in a sheltered part of the back garden with the option of moving them back into the greenhouse if a sharp frost is forecast.

I soaked mine in warm water for as long as it takes an eight year old to fill 30 pots, watered them with warm water, and put in a propagator on the windowsill... and they fairly jumped out in about three days!

That's what worries me. I can't risk putting mine on the plot until at least the middle of May and they do grow so fast.
