. use it like a pick axe swinging it over the head for hard ground or in the hands and use like a pick digging in and drawing it back puling the soil with the blade flat

I know I'm cacky handed, but I want the thing to go in deeper than it does naturally, so perhaps I give it a bit too much welly, which results in me bending to tug up the soil, which makes my back hurt more than digging.

I love my azada, it really does take a lot of the effort out of digging. I dug a trench with mine today (1 foot deep, 15 feet long) in about 20 minutes.
Lynne.

So much to do, but so little time.

swing over head and chop down onto soil, then use the handle to lever the clump up. leverage is very powerful. If the soil is lighter, just chop along as you walk backwards and it will be fine.
Self-sufficient in rasberries and bindweed. Slug pellets can be handy.

I stand with my feet apart and raise the azada (not above shoulder height though) and let the weight of the azada hit the ground between my feet. The tool does the work rather than your back.

Mrs Digger has a similar approach. Her husband does all the work rather than her back!
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?
