The are a few large clumps growing wild on an abandoned plot.

Can they be utilised?

Can't see why not - lucky you.  Too late to pick this year but mark their positions for next so that you can find them.

Asparagus is not too keen on being moved once it is well established. I would try to transplant just one clump in the first year - just in case it did not succeed. The roots of asparagus spread quite a way, so do not dig close to the plant and, when transplanting, spread the roots out really well.
Have you tried saving some of the seed from these ferral plants? This is often a better way to ensure survival of the supply. The downside is that you have a two year wait for an edible crop; the upside is that you have two years of dribbling in anticipation!

As the amount of stems appear to be multiplying, but are very close together (like a border perrenial that needs dividing up), I wondered how it was spreading and if there would be any new shoots with roots around the perimeter of the clump that could be removed and planted like crowns.

It's going be lost in the advancing brambles unless something is done before next summer (together with several orchids).

My mother had a huge clump of asparagus growing by her road (some distance from the farm house). She dug out an area about a foot away and around from the centre stalks, and quite deep. With help she pulled it onto old blankets, then on a wagon up to the house where she planted the lump whole. Over the years she's dug out smaller plants which went into the new line, as well as got lots of young ones from the seeds. If you're not willing or able to dig deep and sweat a bit, then leave the clump. The roots really are large and widespread.
