This might sound like a stupid question! I have not seen onion sets (?) here in Spain, just onion seed.  I know the seeds will tale longer to grow, is it a case of plant seeds one year and harvest the next year? Or am I better to wait until we visit the UK and buy onion sets?

I started some from seed about 3 months ago and they are ready to plant. I have seen the sets (slod in bunches) here for sale not not now. I have a good shop round the corner where I'vr seen them in boxes. If they still have them would you like me to send them to you?

Hi Biscombe,
I had better wait for your offer incase I am ´tempting fate´or ´counting my chickens´ before the house purchase goes through! In my mind I have planted and harvested so much veg and fruit! And as for renovating the house!!
I was at the supermarket yesterday and had a look through the gardening bit and noticed they only had onion seeds.  I almost bought loads of veggie seeds but decided to wait until the contract is signed, just incase I tempt fate!
Thanks for the offer though.  I will be intouch when I need sets!!

I'm quite keen to have a go at growing onions from seed too - I brought a packet on Saturday that states March - April for sowing out, but I'm pretty sure we're a month behind up here anyway (April in Sheffield was very frosty!), so I might take the risk and plant some now

Today I planted out Kelsae Onions planted from seed, got high hopes for them!! I'll let you know how I get on.

How do you go on with the temperatures and water for growing there?

John, at the moment we just  have a patio, so save the tap water as it runs (before it gets hot) and go up and down the stairs with the 5ltr bottles!  
Had a massive storm last week, monsoon rain 40cubic mtrs (?) per mtr for over an hour and the rest of the night just hard rain.  Plenty of water fell then.  Last year was bad for rain this year they have said it is ok.  Not that it stopped the old ladies washing the pavements using a hosepipe, they carried on as if there was plenty of water! I think I was the only person being careful and saving water.
