well ive just got back from the allotment, and there is still no sign of the above mentioned. sowed them about the first week of april, and it turned stone cold straight away afterwards. plenty of weeds on that bit of ground `tho! think i`ll have another go on monday. :(

I think the soil temperature has been the problem - too cold for many things. At least it seems to have warmed up now. I've not sowed my carrots and parsnips yet either. Better late than never.

I suppose you could try cloching to warm things up for an earlier crop though.

I sowed some carrots on a glorious sunny day back at the beginning of April too.  The very next day it snowed   (That's Sheffield for you!).  Despite that though, one set of seedlings has come through.  As for the other set... I'll think I'm going to try again in a week or so.

My parsnips are doing very well but the carrots have only just come up. I planted them at the same time but the parsnips were about 4 weeks in front!!

I sowed lots of Carrots but I've only seen about 3 seedlings so far.

I also planted carrots and parsnips at the beginning of April and there is nothing growing thats visible except the odd weed!

When do I know if its all a disaster and dig it through again ready to try some more?

I haven't planted my carrots and parsnips yet, though OH keeps saying you'd better hurry up or you'll be too late!!!  Bewtter late than never though eh? lol

I've got some broad beans that I started off in pots out and they are doing well and put the peas out last Thursday, but keeping an eye on the weather in case we get a cold snap again.  Haven't been out there today though as its been raining all night.  Wants to hurry up and dry though as I've got my shallots in that I saved from last year's crop, but haven't yet planted my onions.

I tried loo rolls with swetcorn and it was a disaster for me. I think I didn't keep them damp enough.  So good luck and let us know how you end up.
I've got about 200 square black 3" pots so I use them. I've had them about 3 years now, so  they may not be ecologically sound but they are re-used.

Toilet roll cores have worked for me too. I sowed some early nantes carrots about 3 or 4 weeks ago and have just planted them, still in their little toilet roll houses, onto the allotment. Didn't bother to thin them out so now hoping for the best! :?
