sieving soil
« on: March 14, 2007, 21:28 »
am slowly getting through sieving my soil on this old neglected flower bed - have been putting the sieved stuff in bags til it is done and there is space to put it back -

small problem tho - have run out of bags!! any suggestions?

mum suggested laying out a ground sheet and putting it on that - but it will kill the grass as i am only able to do little bits at a time,  so am doing a bit each day.......

It won't kill the grass unless you cover it for weeks.  If you can move the groundsheet every week or so, then it shouldn't be a problem.

ok ty.

i think i'm just a bit picky about leaving it out on the front lawn to be honest i like things to look neat and tidy.  i don't know why but the thought of leaving it out for all to see makes me feel uneasy

lily of the valley and lots of stones are my two main reasons - it will hopefully be a veg patch when done

Glad you're going to the trouble of sieving, Jennyb. The lily of valleys are SO ramapant from just one bit of missed root. Had to do that with mine, hundreds of lineal feet, about a yard in width. Can't believe the original owner actually wound soaker hosing through it all!

well i think i have most of the main root out - problem is there is a rose bush that mum wants to keep,  a pyracantha (can't spell it! - a thorny bush) that it has grown into and then the stuff has grown into the concrete path edge too!!

don't think i will get it all out this year,  but due to a drainage pipe the bed isn't very deep,  so i was thinking maybe put my squash plants in there....

gonna fill my last few bags today,  search the agrage for more big bags and then ask on freecycle if anyone has any if i need to!

What about trying to find one of those big bulk bags that builders use for sand etc.
I used to work in a helium gas factory, but I walked out, no one talks to me like that.
