Electric Heater - any suggestions
« on: February 16, 2011, 18:15 »
Hi everyone...  :)    Can anybody recommend an electric heater for my new greenhouse... preferably one that is controllable and keep it at a constant temperature, rather than an eratic one where temperature fluctuates. Thanks as always  :) :)

I have one of these from Argos, it seems to do the job.  To be honest I only use it to keep the greenhouse frost free, I don't really use it to get to any sort of warm temperature as I germinate all my seeds indoors so don't really see the necessity.

I've used the Gardman type of electric heater.

They do a good job in a small greenhouse - mine is only 6 x 6 - but they are quite expensive to run.  I just wait for the weather to get warmer now and cover sensitive plants with fleece.

I bought a Hotbox Fan Heater 2,8kw from Two Wests and Elliott I cannot fault it.
It blows continually and the heater kicks in and out as required to the heat you set. The advantage of continually blowing is that it circulates air and helps to prevent condensation and fungal problems etc. I t can be used in summer if you like running cold to circulate air on the very hot still days (if we get any) As I say it really does keep the temperature even. hope this helps.

Thanks for the replies... one of my friends has suggested as Parasene Frost Fighter. I have looked one up on their website,,,
https://www.parasene.com/vshop/details.asp?prodID=201
It looks ideal, but has anyone any idea what the running costs are likely to be?

Expensive , it would probably be cheaper to buy all your veg at Harrods.

IMO heating greenhouses early season is not worth the effort or cost. Heaters are handy for  cold weather later in the year or if you are growing for the showbench but not practical for the average domestic grower.

Electric heaters are fine but only if you're on Economy 7.

They do save you having to wander out in the dark when you forget to refill the parafin as well...
